Mifi 2200 Charging via USB while still running in Wifi Access Point Mode

by Hawke Robinson — Jun 03, 2010 06:37 AM

When you connect a normal USB cable to the Mifi 2200, it automatically switches out of Wifi Access Point mode, and becomes like the USB 727, a USB dial-up cellular modem with the Wifi AP turned off. However, there is a way to manually edit the configuration file to change this behavior...

This is a bug, but easily resolved, as long as one realizes there is a dependency issue under certain conditions, namely the AddRemove Widget.

Enable html tags to work within Plone 2 and Plone 3 Description field

Enable html tags to work within Plone 2 and Plone 3 Description field

by Hawke Robinson — May 02, 2010 10:01 PM

I have generally found for most of my sites that I prefer the formatting in the Description field be more than just the default "bold" and no carriage returns that most of the Plone templates use. <br> <br>This article describes how to customize your portal skin template so that all description fields can have better formatting by enabling allowance of html tags such as br in the description field. <br> This article provides information on how to do so with both Plone 2.5 and Plone 3.x using the ZMI, and gives examples on modifying both the portal_content/document_view and portal_content/newsitem_view so that your standard Plone pages and News Items can have their Description field allow html tags.

G-Tech Goodhope Bags - Bluetooth Fabric Keyboard

G-Tech Goodhope Bags - Bluetooth Fabric Keyboard

by Hawke Robinson — Apr 21, 2010 05:42 PM

This fabric roll up keyboard is a different approach for mobile keyboard options. THough not too different from the old waterproof rubber roll-up keyboard, it is MUCH smaller and has a better feel to it. However it has some significant limitations compared to standard hard body fold up keyboards. This model is known as the G-tech 5250 Smart-fabric wireless keyboard. It only supports SPP Bluetooth profile. It DOES NOT SUPPORT HID bluetooth profile. And it is likely to NOT be very cross platform friendly due to very proprietary (it seems so far) drivers and software requirements. This makes it a not very "open friendly" option for those running operating systems like Linux, *BSD, etc...

Rebuild Windows OS Install Disc to include newer drivers

by Hawke Robinson — Apr 16, 2010 05:49 PM

If you have a system with newer controllers like RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks), you may run into a problem with Windows XP, Windows Vista, and other versions of Windows where you can't get the computer to recognize the controller, so you can not install Windows at all. In the past you could use a floppy, but those days are gone, and it often won't work anyway. Using a technique called slipstreaming you can insert your drivers into an image of your install CD or DVD, and burn a new copy with the driver included, and voila, you are under way with your install. A key component is something like ISO Buster.

Add context menu - aka service menu - items to KDE4

by Hawke Robinson — Mar 06, 2010 12:33 AM

I have NOT enjoyed the process of being pushed into KDE4. But have been using it with Suse 11.2 for several months now (still far less stable, and far less usable than KDE3, but far better than earlier releases). One annoying item has been the lack of being able to easily perform in context functions in a folder for example Add > Document > Writer. Here I am posting mostly as a reminder to myself, but hopefully helps others, how to add such items.

Nokia N900 With Bluetooth Keyboard

Nokia N900 With Bluetooth Keyboard

by Hawke Robinson — Feb 09, 2010 09:29 PM

I still have several folding keyboards from my Palm Treo and other PDA devices over the years. Only one is bluetooth, the rest infrared. I was hoping to use my Palm bluetooth 3245WW folding keyboard. There are apparently a number of bluetooth keyboards out there that will easily work with the N900, but some others can be a bit more challenging...

Nokia N900 running Maemo Linux - Now THIS is more like it!

Nokia N900 running Maemo Linux - Now THIS is more like it!

by Hawke Robinson — Feb 07, 2010 09:54 AM

I posted back in December my terrible experience with the Droid. I've been looking at replacement options for my ancient Treo 700p for years. I had been holding out for the Palm Pre to show up on Verizon ( now called the Palm Pre Plus ). The Pre has a LOT going for it, but I still didn't quite feel ready to take the plunge. Then I finally learned more about the Nokian N900, and finally took a chance to go for it, though I am taking an unusual approach, that others may or may not want to try out. The short of it is, so far, on day 2, I LOVE this N900, and it is only going to get better and better. And as fas I can tell, this is the MOST OPEN smartphone (really more a micro netbook) on the market, and is is well polished...

Hacked together Linux-based headset wearable computer

Hacked together Linux-based headset wearable computer

by Hawke Robinson — Jan 22, 2010 04:07 AM

This is a totally hacked, developer only, and as he states clearly, not really safe or ready for general use, but nice proof of concept prototype of a complete mobile wearable linux-based computer system all contained within the headset assembly. Still far too low res for me, I wish there were some higher res glasses out there that could go with such a setup (once tightened up and cleaned up). Still, fun idea, check it out...

Verizon USB broadband script and config files for Linux.

by Hawke Robinson — Jan 21, 2010 06:48 PM

As per request from the latest SLUG (Spokane Linux User Group) meeting, I am uploading the script and config files I use for connecting my Verizon Novatel evdo device under Linux. I have used this setup under many Linux distros, AI OS, Ubuntu, Suse, and others. The only real prerequisite is ppp installed, and you might have to run a mknod (but the script will tell you if that is the case)...

Never, Ever, Install the Singing & Dancing Product for Plone. It should be called "Search & Destroy" (all your plone sites).

by Hawke Robinson — Jan 14, 2010 06:27 PM

S&D has to be the single worst Product experience I have ever had using Zope/Plone since I dabbled with Zope back in 1999, and more fully committed to it's use with most of my own (and a few client's) 30-50+ websites since 2004. I can not warn everyone strongly enough, avoid installing it, even to test it, and never ever include it in your buildout.cfg! And forget any helpful support from their list or their developer. The developer obviously has a "different way of thinking" that is not conducive to meeting Zope/Plone standards, and it shows in the "support" as well.

Wireless Energy At Last? Tesla's Technology Manifest? RCA's Airnergy WiFi Harvesting Charger.

by Hawke Robinson — Jan 11, 2010 06:07 PM

From CES 2010, RCA is introducing a product that "harvests" wifi signals, and converts them into DC power to charge a battery wirelessly. According to the video, they reputedly recharged a Blackberry device from 30% to full charge in 90 minutes (depends on wifi signal strength, and batteries being charged of course).

Palm Pre Plus & Pixi Plus available through Verizon on January 25th, 2010.

by Hawke Robinson — Jan 09, 2010 09:27 PM

Finally, a solid release date, and details on the devices. I am still not 100% decided if I will get the Pre Plus or not, I am concerned the calendaring is equally lacking as was the Droid in my earlier articles. But very tempting with the enhancements in the Plus version.

Always Innovating Touch Book AI OS 2010-01.a released.

by Hawke Robinson — Jan 07, 2010 05:25 PM

The latest revision of the Touchbook's AI OS has been released. I have downloaded and installed via the simple shell script listed on the AI wiki. There are a few caveats about the process, but if you follow it carefully, it is very simple and straight forward. I'll be posting a review in coming days on the differences and improvements.

Touch Book 1st Competitor on the way: Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid

Touch Book 1st Competitor on the way: Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid

by Hawke Robinson — Jan 07, 2010 05:26 PM

Though it appears to be quite a bit larger (11.6" screen vs. Touchbook's 8.9" screen) it definitely appears to have a more polished appearance. The cosmetic and design similarities are strikingly similar to the Touchbook, silver and black with red top, rubberized interior lining, detachable screen from keyboard, etc. However, the interior hardware is significantly different, and it is (unfortunately) so far Windows 7 only. The Snapdragon and Intel CULV processor I fear might make putting Nix distros on it a significant challenge? The 128 SSD would be nice, but must add considerably to the cost. And how is the battery life?
